Game Designer
at Disney Online Studios in Los Angeles, California
The Game Designer for Disney Online Studios is responsible for the overall game design of a specific project. This person will need to be assertive in rallying the team to the project’s creative vision and drive the project to a very high quality level while maintaining the team’s buy-in. Presentation skills are a must as this person will be expected to be able to clearly relay the project’s design vision and field any questions /concerns in a clear and professional manner.ResponsibilitiesGame Design:
- Generate high level and universal systems design
- Generate and guide low level mechanics and controls
- Generate clear and understandable design documentation to a level detail actionable by production staff
- Generate and present inspirational designs
- Generate in-game content ranging from mechanics and character implementation to world layout
- Identify player readability issues and offer solutions
- Identify and then resolve points of player frustration
- Analyze, understand and use as guidance competitive titles and mechanics
- Properly and professionally balance internal production with external LOB’s. (Brand licensing, Marketing, Film studio, etc.)
- Responsible for helping tune and polish the product
- Properly balance project scope with timeline and budget demands
Design Leadership:
- BE ASSERTIVE (without being dictatorial) in driving the design and product vision forward
- Use communication skills to convey creative vision and requirements to the team (both written and verbal)
- Develop and maintain strong ties with production staff to ensure the game’s creative vision is fulfilled.
- Effectively give and receive constructive criticism
- Call out when something is not good enough while maintaining team buy-in
- Be a good salesman at all times for the project vision
- Up to speed on the latest related gaming trends, system features and play style evolutions
- Work closely with producers to find balance between products design vision and all business elements. (Milestones, marketing, legal issues, etc.)
- At least 2 years of game industry experience; preferably in Design
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent work experience
- Must have experience in the production process (Programming, model building, animation etc.)
- Must have virtual world genre experience
- Proficiency in Photoshop, Scripting Languages, MS office
- Good writing skills
- Drawing skills
